About

Namco's tabletop game that reimagined the outcome of the Genpei War comes with a Famicom cartridge that can also be played as a standalone singleplayer RPG. At the start of the game, you are shown the randomized locations of the Three Sacred Imperial Regalia of Japan (which grant powerful abilities) once and also starts in a randomized province. Playing as Kagekiyo, your goal in the game is to conquer provinces and eventually overthrow Yoritomo's shogunate. Constantly following Kagekiyo in each province is a white portal which randomly spawns monsters that engage with him in turn-based battles. Defeating them will earn you money, "virtues" and occasionally spell cards which are the resources you need to cast spells. In each province, you will find Jizō statues which heals you for a price, treasure chests which contain spell cards, small torii gates which are where you can spend your virtues on raising your stats individually, large torii gates which are teleportation gateways to travel to any other large torii gate around the world map and castles which you must take over in order to conquer a province. Taking over a castle can only be done in provinces without a large torii gate, and it can be done by buying the castle with your money, or battling the castle lord for its control. The multiplayer mode of this cartridge is meant to be played with the tabletop game. The player on controller port 2 controls the monster-spawning white portal that follows Player 1's character, specifically the portal's movement, the type of monster to spawn and the time and place to spawn a monster. In battles, the second controller also controls the monsters. The objective in the multiplayer mode is a race to overthrow Yoritomo first and players are expected to trade controllers with each other since during another player's turn, controller 1 will still control that player's character and controller 2 will still control the white portal and the monsters.
