Loosely based on the Nansō Satomi Hakkenden novel, this RPG puts you in the role of Shino Inuzuka traveling across historical Japan on a quest to recruit 3 other members of the Eight Canine Warriors and gather their prayer beads to pacify the ghost of Tamazusa. Although following the Japanese RPG formula created by Dragon Quest for the most parts, Satomi Hakkenden also has some unique elements in its gameplay. Upon leveling up, the number of stat points available to allocate are randomized and can lead to wildly different stats with each playthrough. The yōkai you encounter are not all hostile. Friendly yōkai can be talked to, which will lead to them giving you parting gifts. Aside from experience, defeating hostile yokai also gives you "conscience" points. This stat affects how NPCs react to you and determines whether you can go to the final boss or not. You lose conscience points if you attack friendly yōkai, and this stat can become negative as a result.
