About

Overview

Ys V: Kefin, The Lost City of Sand (Ys V: Ushinawareta Suna no Miyako Kefin) is the fifth entry in the Ys action RPG series by Falcom. The game was released for the Super Famicom in 1995 and an "Expert" version of the game, which featured a higher difficulty level, was released in 1996 by Koei. A remake of Ys V was created by Taito and Arc System Works in 2006 for the PlayStation 2 under the title Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand. None of the versions of Ys V were ever published outside of Japan but an English fan translation for the original Super Famicom game was released by Aeon Genesis in 2013.

Adol "the Red" Christin comes across the legend of a mysterious city that vanished into the desert, and heads off to seek its whereabouts. The game uses the top-down perspective of earlier Ys games as well as the active combat (that is, it requires a button press to swing Adol's sword) of Ys III. This format would then persist until the modern 3D Ys entries. Ys V also has a unique magic system that involves creating "fluxstones" out of three elemental stones in various amounts. Each fluxstone has a separate effect when cast. In addition, Adol earns a different type of XP for using magic instead of his sword, boosting his MP limit upon levelling up his magic skills.
