Magical Tarurūto-kun debuts on home console as a side-scrolling platforming game. Playing as Tarurūto, your main action is shooting out your tongue in 4 directions which serves both as an attack and a method to snatch takoyaki - the game's collectibles and currency. While uncollected, takoyaki are also platforms that Tarurūto can stand on. By itself, collecting takoyaki gives you 1-Ups. Where it serves the function of a currency is at the end of a stage where you visit Mimora's shop to buy magical items, each giving you a special effect for one stage. Tarurūto moves between stages via a world map resembling Super Mario Bros. 3. Other than stages, worlds also contain areas where you can play minigames to get you more takoyaki or 1-Ups directly. On the starting menu of the game is a rare feature for games of its generation: An in-game encyclopedia called the "Taru Codex" which contains 2 sections - one that explains the effects of the magical items from Mimora's shop and one that contains brief profiles for characters from the Magical Tarurūto-kun license.
