The game shares similarities with the portable entries of the original <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/mega-man/3025-523/" data-ref-id="3025-523">Mega Man</a> series, including multiple sets of bosses (however, they are split into separate difficulty levels, each with their own storyline: Normal Mode for the first four, Hard Mode for the second four, and Xtreme Mode for all eight).</p><p>The game is set in the year <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/year-x/3015-7424/" data-ref-id="3015-7424">21XX</a>, sometime after the events of <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/mega-man-x2/3030-19801/" data-ref-id="3030-19801">Mega Man X2</a>. After revisiting the first highway scene from <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/mega-man-x/3030-9463/" data-ref-id="3030-9463">Mega Man X</a> (in a simulated <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/deja-vu/3015-757/" data-ref-id="3015-757">déjà vu</a> sequence), Maverick Hunter <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/mega-man-x/3005-1474/" data-ref-id="3005-1474">Mega Man X</a> learns that a group of mysterious hackers (<a href="/techno/3005-28900/" data-ref-id="3005-28900">Techno</a>, <a href="/geemel/3005-28901/" data-ref-id="3005-28901">Geemel</a>, and <a href="/zain/3005-28902/" data-ref-id="3005-28902">Zain</a>) have infiltrated the "Mother Computer" system of the Hunter base and is spreading fake data all over the world (causing chaos). With entrance to the Mother Computer's core digitally shielded by the data of <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/mavericks/3015-359/" data-ref-id="3015-359">Mavericks</a> previously defeated by X, our hero must dive into cyberspace (with the help of fellow Hunter <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/zero/3005-1261/" data-ref-id="3005-1261">Zero</a> and Reploid computer genius <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/middy/3005-24081/" data-ref-id="3005-24081">Middy</a>) to defeat his previous adversaries and restore the core.</p><p>The game was later released as a <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/virtual-console/3015-2925/" data-ref-id="3015-2925">Virtual Console</a> title for the <a href="//www.giantbomb.com/nintendo-3ds/3045-117/" data-ref-id="3045-117">Nintendo 3DS</a> in Japan on December 4, 2013, and in North America on May 1, 2014.</p>
