<h2>Overview</h2><figure data-align="right" data-size="small" data-img-src="https://www.giantbomb.com/a/uploads/original/2/23093/2857446-dragon%20ball%20z%20-%20super%20gokuuden%20totsugeki%20hen%20%28j%29_00005.png" data-ref-id="1300-2857446" data-ratio="0.93359375" data-width="256" data-embed-type="image" style="width: 256px"><a class="fluid-height" style="padding-bottom:93.4%" href="https://www.giantbomb.com/a/uploads/original/2/23093/2857446-dragon%20ball%20z%20-%20super%20gokuuden%20totsugeki%20hen%20%28j%29_00005.png" data-ref-id="1300-2857446"><img alt="No Caption Provided" src="https://www.giantbomb.com/a/uploads/original/2/23093/2857446-dragon%20ball%20z%20-%20super%20gokuuden%20totsugeki%20hen%20%28j%29_00005.png" srcset="https://www.giantbomb.com/a/uploads/original/2/23093/2857446-dragon%20ball%20z%20-%20super%20gokuuden%20totsugeki%20hen%20%28j%29_00005.png 256w" sizes="(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px" data-width="256"></a></figure><p>Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokūden - Kakusei-hen, loosely translated to "Dragon Ball Z: Super Goku's Story, Chapter of Awakening", is a sci-fi fantasy RPG developed by <a href="https://www.giantbomb.com/tose-co-ltd/3010-1417/" data-ref-id="3010-1417">TOSE</a> and published by <a href="https://www.giantbomb.com/bandai-co-ltd/3010-272/" data-ref-id="3010-272">Bandai</a> for the <a href="https://www.giantbomb.com/super-nintendo-entertainment-system/3045-9/" data-ref-id="3045-9">Super Famicom</a> exclusively in Japan on September 22, 1995.</p><p>A follow-up to <a href="/dragon-ball-z-super-gokuden-totsugeki-hen/3030-11493/" data-ref-id="3030-11493">Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokūden - Totsugeki-hen</a>, which closely follows <a href="/dragon-ball/3025-971/" data-ref-id="3025-971">the Dragon Ball manga and anime series</a>, Kakusei-hen follows the remainder of the original "Dragon Ball" series (the "<a href="/piccolo/3005-442/" data-ref-id="3005-442">Piccolo Jr.</a> Saga") along with several chapters of the <a href="/dragon-ball-z/3025-159/" data-ref-id="3025-159">"Dragon Ball Z"</a> series (the "Saiyan Saga" and the "Frieza Saga"). It also revamps the combat and <a href="/branching-story-line/3015-1646/" data-ref-id="3015-1646">branching storyline</a> system while adding <a href="/quiz/3015-5714/" data-ref-id="3015-5714">quiz</a> segments testing the player's knowledge on key dialogue and actions from the manga.</p><p>As with the previous game, most of the gameplay is a simple text-based re-telling of the story, utilizing portraits to show the composition of each character in the cutscene. Throughout the game, players are given choices for <a href="https://www.giantbomb.com/branching-story-line/3015-1646/" data-ref-id="3015-1646">branching paths</a> (allowing the story to play differently from the manga), bonus <a href="https://www.giantbomb.com/minigame/3015-116/" data-ref-id="3015-116">mini-games</a>, and one-on-one real-time battles as the main protagonist <a href="https://www.giantbomb.com/goku/3005-441/" data-ref-id="3005-441">Goku</a> (with some segments as his son <a href="/gohan/3005-443/" data-ref-id="3005-443">Gohan</a>).</p><p>Continuing the events of the previous game, Kakusei-hen starts years after the defeat of the <a href="/piccolo-daimao/3005-12506/" data-ref-id="3005-12506">Demon King Piccolo</a> by the young martial artist <a href="/goku/3005-441/" data-ref-id="3005-441">Goku</a>. After a confrontation with King Piccolo's son (also named <a href="/piccolo/3005-442/" data-ref-id="3005-442">Piccolo</a>), an adult Goku and his allies must contend with a trio of <a href="/alien/3015-186/" data-ref-id="3015-186">alien</a> invaders (the <a href="/saiyan/3015-58/" data-ref-id="3015-58">"Saiya-jins"</a>, of which Goku is revealed to share his alien origin with) before making their way to the distant planet <a href="/planet-namek/3035-71/" data-ref-id="3035-71">Namek</a> to search for its <a href="/dragon-balls/3055-278/" data-ref-id="3055-278">Dragon Balls</a> (before the forces of the alien warlord <a href="/frieza/3005-444/" data-ref-id="3005-444">Freeza</a> finds them).</p>
