<h2>Overview</h2><figure data-align="right" data-size="small" data-img-src="https://www.giantbomb.com/a/uploads/original/0/4629/429973-gex_3___deep_cover_gecko.jpg" data-ref-id="1300-429973" data-ratio="0.75" data-width="320" data-embed-type="image" style="width: 320px"><a class="fluid-height" style="padding-bottom:75.0%" href="https://www.giantbomb.com/a/uploads/original/0/4629/429973-gex_3___deep_cover_gecko.jpg" data-ref-id="1300-429973"><img alt="No Caption Provided" src="https://www.giantbomb.com/a/uploads/original/0/4629/429973-gex_3___deep_cover_gecko.jpg" srcset="https://www.giantbomb.com/a/uploads/original/0/4629/429973-gex_3___deep_cover_gecko.jpg 320w" sizes="(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px" data-width="320"></a></figure><p>Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko, also known in the European PS1 version as <em>Gex: Deep Cover Gecko</em>, is a 3D third-person platformer developed by <a href="/crystal-dynamics/3010-959/" data-ref-id="3010-959">Crystal Dynamics</a> and published by <a href="/eidos-interactive/3010-658/" data-ref-id="3010-658">Eidos Interactive</a> for the <a href="/playstation/3045-22/" data-ref-id="3045-22">Sony PlayStation</a> in North America on March 1999 and in Europe on April 1999, with a <a href="/nintendo-64/3045-43/" data-ref-id="3045-43">Nintendo 64</a> release (co-published by <a href="/crave-entertainment/3010-111/" data-ref-id="3010-111">Crave Entertainment</a>) in North America on September 2000 and in Europe on July 2000.</p><p>The third and final game in the <a href="/gex/3025-238/" data-ref-id="3025-238">Gex</a> trilogy of platformers, Deep Cover Gecko puts players back in the role of the <a href="/pop-culture-reference/3015-1534/" data-ref-id="3015-1534">wise-cracking, TV-watching</a> <a href="/lizards/3015-11945/" data-ref-id="3015-11945">gecko</a> <a href="/gex/3005-2395/" data-ref-id="3005-2395">Gex</a> (voiced by <a href="https://www.giantbomb.com/dana-gould/3040-30263/" data-ref-id="3040-30263">Dana Gould</a> in the North American release and by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dwarf" data-target="true" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Red Dwarf</a> actor <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_John-Jules" data-target="true" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Danny John-Jules</a> in the European version) as he seeks to rescue boxom <a href="/spies/3015-1238/" data-ref-id="3015-1238">spy</a> babe Agent Xtra (who is portrayed in <a href="/live-action-cutscene/3015-3616/" data-ref-id="3015-3616">live-action</a> segments by actress Marliece Andrada, then-known for her role in the TV show <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baywatch" data-target="true" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Baywatch</a>) from his arch-nemesis Rez.</p><p>Much of the game plays similar to the game's predecessor, <a href="/gex-enter-the-gecko/3030-11371/" data-ref-id="3030-11371">Gex: Enter the Gecko</a>, where Gex navigates through various levels themed on different TV and movie themes in order to collect <a href="/remote-control/3055-6342/" data-ref-id="3055-6342">Remotes</a> and unlock new areas. Throughout the game, Gex has a variety of <a href="/disguise/3015-802/" data-ref-id="3015-802">"disguises"</a> in each level, some of which gives him special abilities (such as <a href="/gliding/3015-1924/" data-ref-id="3015-1924">gliding</a> and super-strength), and can pilot various vehicles (including a <a href="/kangaroo/3015-3115/" data-ref-id="3015-3115">kangaroo</a>, a <a href="/snowboard/3055-2/" data-ref-id="3055-2">snowboard</a>, and a <a href="/tank/3055-92/" data-ref-id="3055-92">tank</a>).</p><p>The game also received a handheld adaptation for the <a href="/game-boy-color/3045-57/" data-ref-id="3045-57">Game Boy Color</a> in November 1999, known a <em>Gex 3: Deep Pocket Gecko</em>. Developed by <a href="/david-a-palmer-productions/3010-1542/" data-ref-id="3010-1542">David A. Palmer Productions</a>, this version is a side-scrolling platformer similar to the GBC version of <a href="/gex-enter-the-gecko/3030-11371/" data-ref-id="3030-11371">the previous game</a>.</p><p>The PS1 version later received a digital <a href="/playstation-network/3015-2623/" data-ref-id="3015-2623">PlayStation Network</a> re-release (as a <a href="/psone-classics/3015-8405/" data-ref-id="3015-8405">PSone Classics</a> title) in North America on October 1, 2009 and in Europe on July 6, 2011. It was also included in the <a href="/gex-trilogy/3030-89587/" data-ref-id="3030-89587">Gex Trilogy</a> compilation on June 16, 2025.</p><h2>Levels</h2><p>Like in earlier Gex games, each level is themed after particular TV and movie themes.
