<h2>Overview</h2><p>Laplace no Ma (ラプラスの魔, which literally translates to "Laplace's Demon") is a <a href="/japan/3035-37/" data-ref-id="3035-37">Japanese</a> role-playing game with adventure game elements initially released on July 4, 1987 for the <a href="/nec-pc-8801/3045-109/" data-ref-id="3045-109">NEC PC-8801</a> and <a href="/nec-pc-9801/3045-112/" data-ref-id="3045-112">PC-9801</a> computers. <a href="/humming-bird-soft/3010-1247/" data-ref-id="3010-1247">Humming Bird Soft</a> developed the title and it was ported to several other computers including the <a href="/msx/3045-15/" data-ref-id="3045-15">MSX</a> in 1989 and the <a href="/sharp-x68000/3045-95/" data-ref-id="3045-95">Sharp X68000</a> in 1990. A console version of Laplace's Demon was later developed by <a href="/human-entertainment-inc/3010-1209/" data-ref-id="3010-1209">Human Entertainment</a> for the <a href="/turbografx-cd/3045-53/" data-ref-id="3045-53">PC-Engine CD</a> in 1993 and <a href="/vic-tokai/3010-643/" data-ref-id="3010-643">Vic Tokai</a> created a <a href="/super-nintendo-entertainment-system/3045-9/" data-ref-id="3045-9">Super Famicom</a> version in 1995. <a href="/pc/3045-94/" data-ref-id="3045-94">PC</a> re-releases of the original PC-88, 98 and Sharp X68000 editions of the game were also published by <a href="/d4-enterprise-inc/3010-1808/" data-ref-id="3010-1808">D4 Enterprise</a> on <a href="https://www.amusement-center.com/en/project/egg/index.shtml" data-target="true" data-nofollow="true" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Project EGG</a> in 2014 and 2016. Laplace's Demon eventually grew into a multi-media franchise called Ghost Hunter that encompassed novels, manga, table-top RPGs and two video game sequels developed by Humming Bird Soft.</p><p>Laplace's Demon is a mixture of the <a href="/games/?sort=release_date&amp;filter_type=genre&amp;filter_value=5/">role-playing</a> as well as <a href="/survival-horror/3015-4801/" data-ref-id="3015-4801">survival horror</a> genres and is set in the vicinity of <a href="/boston/3035-433/" data-ref-id="3035-433">Boston</a>, <a href="/massachusetts/3035-1875/" data-ref-id="3035-1875">Massachusetts</a>, in a town called "Newcam"; it is modeled on fictional city Arkham created by <a href="/h-p-lovecraft/3040-8338/" data-ref-id="3040-8338">H. P. Lovecraft</a>. The horror part of the game lies in the exploration of the fictional Weathertop <a href="/mansion/3035-1870/" data-ref-id="3035-1870">Mansion</a>, whose owner dabbled in <a href="/black-magic/3015-636/" data-ref-id="3015-636">black magic</a>. The game's RPG features include its <a href="/classes/3015-405/" data-ref-id="3015-405">character classes</a>—<a href="/dilettante/3055-1554/" data-ref-id="3055-1554">Dilettante</a>, Medium, <a href="/detective/3015-1079/" data-ref-id="3015-1079">Detective</a>, <a href="/scientist/3015-5852/" data-ref-id="3015-5852">Scientist</a>, and <a href="/journalist/3015-2444/" data-ref-id="3015-2444">Journalist</a>—and that the player can leave the mansion to walk around the town to go to shops to buy <a href="/inventory/3015-513/" data-ref-id="3015-513">items</a> needed to defeat the monsters and complete the game.</p>
