NMK's mascot Butasan is put into an entirely different genre. This is a puzzle game, specifically a Sokoban variant. The twist that Okkotoshi Puzzle Tonjan!? brings to the Sokoban variant subgenre is the clear condition. You clear a stage by pushing all tiles with the tile face designated at the top of the screen as the "Clear" tile face down the holes. You can push multiple tiles in a row, but you have a limited number of tiles you can drop per stage before you lose a life. The game also designates a separate tile face (but not always different from the clear tile face) on the right side of the screen as the score multiplier, which multiplies your existing score multiplier by 2. At the end of each stage, your score are ranked for performance out of 5 stars. You get +1 life for every 10 stars. There are special tiles other than mahjong tiles with the following effects if you push them into holes: Fruit: Purely score tiles. Sake bottle: +1 countdown until you lose a life instead of counting down. Pig: +1 life. Fish: -1 life
