<h2>Overview</h2><p><strong>Maya the Bee &amp; Her Friends</strong> is the inaugural game starring the character, who began life as a character in the Gernan book <em><i>Die Biene Maja und ihre Abenteue</i></em>r, written by Waldemar Bonsels and released in 1912. The specific incarnation is loosely based on the 1975 anime, <i>Mitsubachi Māya no Bōken</i><em>.</em></p><p>Maya the Bee &amp; Her Friends actually began life as a <a href="/south-park/3025-346/" data-ref-id="3025-346">South Park</a> game, developed alongside the <a href="/nintendo-64/3045-43/" data-ref-id="3045-43">Nintendo 64</a>/<a href="/playstation/3045-22/" data-ref-id="3045-22">PlayStation</a> title. Reportedly, <a href="/matt-stone/3040-34104/" data-ref-id="3040-34104">Matt Stone</a> and <a href="/trey-parker/3040-34105/" data-ref-id="3040-34105">Trey Parker</a> themselves denied release of the title, citing that the <a href="/game-boy-color/3045-57/" data-ref-id="3045-57">Game Boy Color</a>'s market base was primarily children and that the license was inappropriate for that audience. </p><p>Developers <a href="/crawfish-interactive/3010-1325/" data-ref-id="3010-1325">Crawfish Interactive</a> spent the next year retooling the game to focus on Maya, another license <a href="/acclaim-entertainment-inc/3010-88/" data-ref-id="3010-88">Acclaim</a> had at the time. It was released exclusively for the European market in 2000. </p>
