This sumo wrestling game has a RPG story campaign aside from the typical tournament mode and 2-player versus mode. In the RPG story campaign, you start out in Kyūshū and travel across Japan in an overworld to fight 5 champions in different gyms across the country. After these 5 battles, you transition into the tournament. While traveling, you get random encounters which are other sumo wrestlers challenging you to duels. These random encounters reward items such as: ticket to board a ship, sandal to walk into a mountain to find random items, onigiri which increase your Strength stat, scroll which is necessary to learn new techniques, money which is the currency to buy said moves and "tally sticks" to deter pirates. After winning a fight at a gym, you can start buying new techniques there, provided you have a scroll and enough money. While traveling at the sea, pirates will chase after your ship and they will only back off if you have a tally stick that fits the pirate's tally. If you lose this puzzle battle, the pirates steal the ship, expel you back to Kyūshū but allow you to keep your belongings. The tournament follows a round-robin format. In a match, you have two main actions: push which builds stamina and techniques which consume stamina and create various effects such as instant grounding, long distance throw or spinning around (swapping positions with opponents).
