The old Changi Hospital was built only last century in 1935, and was initially called the Royal Air Force (RAF) Hospital. During World War II, it saw numerous war casualties, and eventually when the Japanese occupied Singapore, Changi Hospital was reportedly used as a prison compound – and rumors are that extensive torture took place. In 1997, the old Changi Hospital ceased all operations, and has remained empty since then. In 2006, apparently it was commercially leased by Bestway Properties, who wanted to turn it into a luxury spa resort by mid-2008 – the project fell through, and only recently has construction work started picking up again.
